Conservation Efforts

Our main conservation effort is to have a living root in the soil at all times. This keeps the soil biology fed along with preventing the soil from eroding. We do this by planting a “cover crop” which is planted in the off season of a grain crop.

When grazing the cattle, we leave the grass a little taller to collect lots of sunlight which helps establish a deeper roots system. We practice intensive managed grazing in which the cattle typically get moved to fresh pasture daily. A benefit to this type of grazing is that it improves water infiltration. Also the daily moves help spread the cattle’s natural fertilizer across the pastures evenly.

Since our motto is “farming with nature”, we also try to create a natural habitat for the wildlife. We create nesting areas for birds, to promote natural pest control. To promote pollinators, we sow flowering plant species around the fields. It is a great thing to be able to watch the wildlife co-habitat with the cattle naturally and quite often you will see the deer grazing amongst the cattle.

We are always looking for new things to try. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t, but the most important thing is to learn and grow from the experience. We strive to care for our land so that future generations can farm for years to come!
